Gili Trawangan, often called Gili T, is the largest and most popular of the three Gili Islands, a small group lying off the coast of Lombok in West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia.
What the island offers
Gili Trawangan is known for its lively atmosphere, particularly in the evenings, when bars and beach venues fill with travellers. It has long attracted backpackers, and much of its accommodation, dining and social life is shaped around that crowd.
Beneath the surface, the island is valued for its coral reefs. Snorkelling and diving are the main draws for many visitors, and the water around the island is the centre of most day trips.
Getting around
One of the island's defining features is that it is car-free. Most travellers move on foot, by bicycle, or by horse-drawn cart, which keeps the streets quiet by day and gives the island a relaxed, unhurried feel.
Planning a visit
- Go for the snorkelling and diving if the reefs are your priority.
- Expect a sociable, nightlife-oriented place if you enjoy meeting other travellers.
- Allow time to explore on foot or by bicycle, since there are no cars to rely on.
- Consider the other two Gili Islands if you want something quieter.
