Gouvernorat de Baalbek

L'un des six gouvernorats du Liban, situé dans la vallée de la Bekaa et abritant les ruines romaines antiques de Baalbek.

Baalbek Governorate is one of the six governorates of Lebanon, set in the Bekaa Valley in the east of the country. It is best known as the home of the ancient Roman ruins of Baalbek, which draw visitors interested in classical архитектура and the history of the region.

What the visit is like

The ruins are the main reason to come. Here you can walk among large stone structures from the Roman period and get a sense of the scale of the site. Because the governorate is largely rural, a visit tends to feel focused and unhurried, centred on the ruins and the surrounding landscape rather than on a dense urban core.

Around the governorate

The Bekaa Valley itself is an open, agricultural plain framed by mountain ranges, and travelling through it is part of the experience. Many visitors combine a trip here with other parts of Lebanon, and it is worth planning ahead for the distances involved.

Useful things to consider before you go:

  • Allow time for the ruins themselves, which are extensive.
  • Check local conditions and access arrangements before setting out.
  • Plan your route around the valley's distances, since the area is spread out.

Baalbek Governorate suits travellers who want to see one of Lebanon's major archaeological sites and enjoy a quieter, landscape-led part of the country.
