Hartberg

Hartberg is a medieval town in Styria, the green south-eastern region of Austria, in the area known as the thermal region. It makes a relaxed stop for travellers who want old streets, open countryside and time for the outdoors.

In the town

The main square is the natural place to begin, with its picturesque setting and the feel of a town that has grown up around its centre over many years. From there, the historic Schlossberg rises above the town, and the Ringwarte tower is one of the features that draws visitors out to look at the surrounding landscape.

Around the town

Vineyards and orchards surround Hartberg, so the countryside is as much part of the visit as the streets themselves. The town works well as a base for several kinds of trip:

  • Hiking through the hills and farmland of the region
  • Cycling between villages and vineyards
  • Wellness stays, in keeping with the thermal region
  • Eating regional food, which the area is known for

Because the town is compact and the surroundings are rural, a visit suits those who like to move at an unhurried pace, spending a morning walking the old centre and an afternoon outdoors. Those planning a trip should check current opening times and transport details for the sights they wish to see before setting out.
