Hautes Fagnes

High Fens is Belgium's largest nature reserve, a wide plateau in the east of the country close to the German border. Its landscape is unlike most of the rest of Belgium: peat bogs, open heathland and forest stretch across the high ground, and the terrain often feels misty and quiet.

What a visit is like

The reserve is best suited to walkers and those who enjoy slow, open-air exploration. Hiking trails lead through the moorland and forest, and wooden boardwalks have been laid over the most fragile areas so that visitors can cross the bog without damaging the peat beneath. Rare wildlife lives here, and the atmosphere of the place changes with the weather, which is part of its appeal.

Practical points

  • Good walking shoes and weather-ready clothing are sensible, as conditions on the plateau can change quickly.
  • Stay on the marked trails and boardwalks to protect the moorland.
  • Plan the day around the reserve itself rather than expecting a short stop.

Why go

High Fens offers a clear change of scene for anyone travelling in Belgium. Visitors who want wide views, quiet paths and an ecosystem shaped over a long time will find it a rewarding place to spend a day outdoors.
