Hội An

Port commercial ancien inscrit au patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO dans le centre du Vietnam, célèbre pour son architecture bien préservée, ses festivals de lanternes et ses artisanats traditionnels.

Hoi An is a city in Quang Nam province, in central Vietnam, on the coast of Asia. It is an ancient trading port, and its old town is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site. For a visitor, it offers a slower pace than many larger Vietnamese cities, with the streets of the historic centre as the main reason to come.

What to see and do

The old town is best explored on foot. Its well-preserved architecture lines narrow streets, and many of the buildings reflect the port's long history as a meeting point for traders. Wandering without a fixed plan suits the area well, as the town rewards close looking at doorways, courtyards and quiet corners.

Hoi An is also known for its lantern festivals, which light up the town and the river in the evening. Visitors who time their trip around these celebrations will see the town at its most festive, though the lanterns are a pleasure at any time of year.

Crafts and everyday life

The city has a strong tradition of handicrafts, and a visit often includes time in workshops and small shops where local artisans work. Watching the craftspeople at their tasks gives a sense of how the town has kept its trades alive.

Planning your visit

  • Getting around: the historic centre is compact and largely walkable.
  • Atmosphere: the old town is calmer than the busiest urban centres, which suits a relaxed stay.
  • Timing: plan an evening visit if you want to see the lanterns.

Hoi An suits travellers interested in heritage, architecture and traditional crafts, and those who enjoy an unhurried city where the past remains visible in its streets.
