The Hospital in the Rock, known in Hungarian as the Sziklakórház, lies beneath Buda Castle in Budapest, on Lovas út in the Castle District. It is a museum and memorial today, but it was built as something very different: an emergency hospital and nuclear bunker cut into the rock during the Cold War.
What to expect
The site is a network of tunnels and chambers carved into the limestone of the hill. Walking through it gives a sense of how a wartime medical facility was meant to function underground, cut off from the city above. Because the setting is entirely subterranean, the experience is quite different from a typical museum visit, and the air and the cool stone walls are part of what visitors remember.
The visit suits people interested in the history of the Cold War, in Budapest's underground spaces, or in how civil defence was planned in the twentieth century. It is a memorial as well as a museum, so it is best approached with a quiet, reflective attitude.
