Tucked into the heart of Montpellier in the pretty Écusson district, Merveilles is the bright, welcoming atelier-boutique of an artisan jeweller — a luminous little space made for plurality and exchange, at 12 rue du Puits du Temple. Everything here is chosen with meaning: handmade jewellery created on site, a selection of ready-to-wear, and colourful fashion accessories, all 100% artisanal, local, and eco-responsible. It's an ode to slow fashion and to the feminine, born of a genuine ethical commitment, and a joyful place where everyone can find their happiness.
At its heart are the jewels — poetic, atypical pieces of "wearable art" crafted by hand in the workshop within the boutique. The technique is patient and entirely slow-fashion: images, collages, and photographs are composed and then set in resin, captured in the moment, before becoming earrings, long sautoirs, brooches, plastrons, bracelets, or rings. Made in brass and nickel-free (in keeping with French regulations), they're wonderfully light and easy to wear, and each one carries a little story or message. The universe is unmistakable — scattered with birds and flowers, full of nature, where hummingbirds whisper in Frida's ear — a tribute to faraway lands, the geometry of life, and feminine icons, with inspirations running from the mystery of Bosch to the poetry of Chagall. The collections are eclectic and ever-evolving, moving between explosions of colour, bohème, baroque, maximalist, and chic, shifting with the artist's inspiration and the vibrations of the world. (Even the resident cat, Marcel, lends a paw with "quality control" on the resined pieces.)
Describing herself as an "accessoiriste de vie," the creator loves to guide each visitor toward the poetic, singular piece that will set their outfit apart and celebrate their individuality — and personalisation is very much part of the experience. If you have a motif or a particular idea in mind, she'll listen and work with you to bring your "dream" to life, in a one-of-a-kind piece only you will wear. Her path here has been a winding one, from observing nature as a child and a stint as a freelance decorator in England to creator markets, the Ateliers St-Roch, and the "artisan d'art" label, before settling into the current boutique in 2019.
Alongside her own creations, you'll also find a thoughtfully chosen range of ready-to-wear from local designers and trendy, colourful accessories, so fashion and jewellery come together and lift one another.
