Palais Gyeongbokgung

Le plus grand des Cinq Grands Palais construits sous la dynastie Joseon, servant de palais royal principal. Construit en 1395, il présente une magnifique architecture traditionnelle coréenne et la célèbre cérémonie de la relève de la garde.

Gyeongbokgung Palace stands in central Seoul, at 161 Sajik-ro in Jongno-gu, and is also known as Gyeongbok Palace. It is the largest of the Five Grand Palaces built during the Joseon Dynasty and served as the main royal palace of that era.

What to expect

The palace is best known for its traditional Korean architecture, with wooden halls, tiled roofs and open courtyards laid out in the formal manner of a royal residence. Walking through its grounds gives a clear sense of the scale the Joseon kings intended. The palace also hosts the changing of the guard ceremony, a colourful procession that many visitors plan their day around.

Planning your visit

  • Location: Jongno-gu, in the heart of Seoul, within the Seoul Capital Area.
  • Time needed: Allow a few hours to see the main halls and courtyards at a comfortable pace.
  • Contact: +82-2-3700-3900.

Because the palace sits in the city centre, it pairs easily with other sights nearby and with a stroll through the surrounding streets. It suits anyone interested in Korean history, architecture or ceremony, and it offers a calm contrast to the busy city beyond its walls.
