Pavillon d'Or (Kinkaku-ji)

Un temple zen de trois étages entièrement recouvert de feuilles d'or et se reflétant dans un étang environnant. Cette structure emblématique est l'un des monuments les plus reconnaissables du Japon et un site du patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO.

Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion, stands in Kyoto in Japan's Kansai Region. It is a Zen temple whose three stories are covered entirely in gold leaf, and the building is reflected in the pond that surrounds it. Few sights in Japan are as easily recognised, and the temple is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

What to expect

The pavilion is the centrepiece of the visit. Its gold surfaces change with the light and the weather, and the reflection in the still water is often what visitors remember most. The temple grounds are laid out around the pond, so the view of the building is best taken slowly, from more than one side.

Because the pavilion is a working Zen temple, it is a place for quiet looking rather than a busy attraction. Visitors tend to move steadily along the path, pausing at the water's edge to take in the view.

Planning a visit

  • It is one of Kyoto's best-known sights, so arriving early can make the view easier to enjoy.
  • Walk the grounds at an unhurried pace and look at the building from several angles.
  • Allow time to combine it with other parts of Kyoto, which is rich in temples and gardens.

For anyone interested in Japanese architecture, Zen tradition or the cultural landscape of Kyoto, the Golden Pavilion offers a clear and memorable starting point.
