Gion is the best-known geisha district in Kyoto, set in the Kansai Region of Japan. It is a neighborhood of narrow streets lined with traditional wooden machiya houses, many with latticed fronts and low eaves, and a number of ochaya tea houses where geisha and maiko are entertained.

What to expect on a walk

Gion is best experienced on foot. Wander the old streets slowly and let the wooden facades, lantern-lit doorways and quiet lanes set the pace. The district has an atmosphere of a older Kyoto that is easy to picture, and the visit rewards patience rather than a checklist.

You may catch sight of geiko and maiko making their way to appointments in the evening. Keep your distance and be courteous: these are people going to work, not performers posing for the street. Photographing them from a respectful distance, without blocking their path, is the expected courtesy.

Planning your visit

  • Come with time to spare, so the streets do not feel rushed.
  • Visit in the early evening if you hope to see geiko and maiko heading out.
  • Stay quiet near the tea houses and do not enter private establishments uninvited.
  • Wear comfortable shoes, since most of the district is walked on foot.

Gion sits within Kyoto, so it pairs naturally with other parts of the city. Combining a stroll here with a wider day of exploring the city gives the district its proper context.
