Réserve naturelle de Banias

Réserve naturelle présentant des ruines antiques, des sentiers de randonnée, et la source de la rivière Banias avec des cascades et une végétation luxuriante.

The Banias Nature Reserve lies in the Golan Heights, in Israel's Northern District. It is a place where ancient ruins, flowing water and green slopes come together, and it is also known by the name Caesarea Philippi.

What to expect

The reserve is built around the source of the Banias River. Water emerges here and falls over rocks in small waterfalls, and the vegetation along its course is lush, giving the site a markedly different feel from the dry hills that surround much of the region. For many visitors, the sound of the water and the shade of the trees are the first things they notice.

Ancient ruins are scattered through the reserve, adding a historical layer to a walk in the outdoors. The combination of archaeology and natural scenery is what defines the place.

Walking the reserve

Hiking trails run through the reserve, so a visit suits anyone who enjoys walking at a relaxed pace. Those who prefer shorter outings can focus on the area around the spring and the falls, while longer walks take in more of the terrain and vegetation.

  • Nature reserve with a spring and waterfalls
  • Ancient ruins to explore on foot
  • Hiking trails for walkers of different abilities
  • Lush vegetation along the river's course

Planning your visit

The reserve is in the Golan Heights, so it works well as part of a wider day trip through the north of the country. To check details before you go, the site can be reached by telephone at +972-4-695-0272. Wear comfortable footwear, as the paths are walking routes rather than paved promenades.
