The Archaeological Site of Volubilis lies near Moulay Idriss Zerhoun in the Meknes-Tafilalet region of Morocco, on the Route de Volubilis. It is also known as the Volubilis Roman Ruins, or Walili, and it is one of the country's best-known heritage sites.

What you will see

The site preserves Roman remains from the 1st to the 3rd centuries AD, and it is regarded as the best-preserved Roman ruin in Morocco. Visitors can walk among basilicas, triumphal arches and mosaic floors that still show the patterns laid down nearly two thousand years ago. The ruins are spread across an open landscape, so the visit is largely a walk on foot between the main structures.

Why it matters

Volubilis is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it offers a clear picture of the Romanization of North Africa. Its town plan, public buildings and decorative floors show how Roman urban life took root far from Rome, and how it blended with the local setting. For many visitors, the mosaics are the highlight, because they reveal the daily tastes and art of the people who lived here.
