Dhammayangyi Temple stands in Old Bagan, in the Mandalay Region of Myanmar. It is the largest temple in Bagan, the plain of many ancient Buddhist monuments, and it is also known as Dhammayangyi Pahto. King Narathu had it built in the 12th century.
What to expect
The temple's great bulk is the first thing most visitors notice. Its massive brick structure rises above the surrounding plain and gives a sense of the scale of the work behind it. Much of the interest lies in its inner passages, which were sealed off. Their purpose and the reasons for closing them remain a source of curiosity, so the temple rewards slow looking and a few questions.

Dhammayangyi suits travellers interested in Myanmar's early Buddhist architecture and in the monuments of Bagan. Because it sits among many other temples across the plain, it works well as one stop in a longer walk or drive through the area, where the surrounding ruins add context to what you see.
