The Galata Tower is a medieval stone tower in the Galata district of Istanbul, on the European side of the city. It was built in 1348, when the Genoese constructed it, and it is also known as the Galata Kulesi or Tower of Christ.
What a visit offers
Today the tower works as both a museum and an observation deck. From its upper level, visitors can take in panoramic views over Istanbul, with the rooftops and streets of the surrounding neighbourhood spread out below. It is a straightforward visit: the building itself is the main draw, and the view from the top is what most people come for.
The area around it
The tower stands in Galata, a district that rewards a slow walk. The streets around it run downhill toward the water, and the neighbourhood is a good base for exploring the older quarters of the city on foot before or after your climb. The address is Bereketzade, Galata Kulesi Sk., 34421 Beyoğlu, Istanbul.
