アジャンタ石窟群

The Ajanta Caves are a set of ancient Buddhist cave monuments in the Ajanta area of Maharashtra, India, not far from the city of Aurangabad. They are also known as the Ajanta Leni or the Ajanta Cave Temples. The caves were cut into the rock across a long period, from around the 2nd century BCE to the 6th century CE, and they are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Visitors come mainly for the paintings and sculptures. Many of the caves hold carved figures and wall paintings, and the monuments give a sense of how Buddhist art developed over several centuries in one place. The site is a serious historical and artistic visit rather than a quick stop, so it suits travellers who enjoy history, art and quiet exploration.

Planning your visit

  • Location: Ajanta, Maharashtra 431117, India, in the region around Aurangabad.
  • What to see: cave monuments with sculptures and paintings, dating across many centuries.
  • Who it suits: visitors interested in Buddhist heritage, ancient art and archaeology.
  • Enquiries: you can call +91 2438 244 307 before you travel.

Because the caves are in a rural part of Maharashtra, it is worth arranging your transport and timing in advance and building in enough time to walk between the caves and take in the details of the work.
