アスペンドス劇場

The Aspendos Theatre stands in the village of Aspendos, in Antalya Province on Turkey's Mediterranean coast, a short drive from the city of Antalya. It is also known as the Aspendos Tiyatrosu, and it is one of the most striking ancient monuments in the region.

Built in 155 AD, the theatre is often described as the best-preserved Roman theatre in the world. Its stone tiers, stage building and surrounding structure give a clear picture of how a provincial Roman audience once gathered to watch performances. Visitors walking up through the seating can take in both the scale of the building and the open landscape around it.

Why visit

  • The theatre's acoustics are exceptional, and many visitors remark on how clearly sound carries across the auditorium.
  • It still hosts performances and events in its original 2nd-century setting, so a visit may coincide with a concert or show.
  • It makes a focused outing for anyone interested in Roman architecture, and it sits comfortably alongside a wider trip through the region.

Planning your trip

Aspendos is best reached by car or taxi from Antalya, which gives you the flexibility to combine the theatre with other stops along the coast. Because the monument is an open-air site, it is worth checking the weather and whether any event is scheduled before you go. For current contact details, you can call +90 242 735 7038.

Allow time to walk the site slowly, sit in the stone seats and listen to the space. Many visitors find that the quiet of the village and the view of the surrounding countryside make the trip as memorable as the ruins themselves.
