アマゾン盆地

The Amazon Basin is a destination and region in northern Brazil, in South America. It is home to the world's largest tropical rainforest, a vast expanse of river, forest and floodplain that is also known locally as Amazônia or the Bacia Amazônica. For many visitors, it is the reason they come to this part of the continent.

What a visit offers

The region is known above all for its wildlife. Travellers come to watch the animals and plants of a tropical forest at close range, and the variety of life here is part of what sets the basin apart. Time spent in the forest, on the water or along the riverbanks tends to be quiet and attentive, with much depending on patience and a good local guide.

The basin is also known for its indigenous cultural experiences. Visitors can learn about the peoples who have lived in this landscape, and about the way their lives and knowledge are connected to the forest. Experiences of this kind are best approached with curiosity and respect.

Planning your trip

  • Setting: a rainforest region covering much of northern Brazil, shaped by its rivers.
  • Main draw: wildlife viewing in one of the world's largest tropical forests.
  • Cultural side: indigenous experiences that add depth to a visit.
  • Pace: most trips here are slower than city travel, built around the forest and the water.

Because the basin is so large, it helps to decide early which part you want to explore and how you will reach it. Choosing well-regarded local operators and asking about the specifics of each experience will make your visit more rewarding.
