アラル

Aral is a town in Kazakhstan, on the shores of what was once the Aral Sea. It was a fishing port, and its streets and harbour were built around the water. Today the sea has receded far from the town, and Aral stands as a stark record of one of the world's most serious environmental disasters.

What you will see

The most striking sight is the ship graveyard. Rusted vessels lie stranded on what was once a seabed, now dry land stretching toward the horizon. Standing among them, you can grasp the scale of the change: boats built to work open water now sit far from any shore. The effect is eerie and quiet, and many visitors find it moving.

Why it makes a visit

  • It offers a direct, physical view of environmental change, rather than a description of it.
  • The landscape is unlike most other places you will visit, which makes it memorable.
  • It suits travellers interested in the environment, in the recent history of the region, or in places that are rarely photographed in the usual way.

Because the subject is grave, a visit tends to be reflective rather than lively. Take time to walk slowly and to read what you can about how the sea came to shrink.

Planning your trip

Aral is a small former port, so expect a quiet town with limited facilities. Plan your transport and accommodation in advance, and check local conditions before you set out, as travel in this remote part of Kazakhstan can be more involved than in the country's larger cities.
