アルコ・デ・サンタ・カタリーナ

The Arco de Santa Catalina stands on 5a Avenida Norte in Antigua Guatemala, in the department of Sacatepéquez. It is one of the most recognizable landmarks of the city's colonial centre, and many visitors make it one of the first stops on a walk through town.

The arch is a bright yellow structure built in the 17th century. Its purpose was practical: it allowed the nuns of the nearby Santa Catalina convent to cross the street without being seen by passers-by. Today it spans the street as a quiet reminder of the convent life that shaped this part of the city.

What to expect

The visit is brief and easy. Most people come to photograph the arch, look up at its colour and detail, and then continue on foot. Because it sits on a street in the historic centre, it fits naturally into a longer stroll.

  • Set in the colonial centre of Antigua Guatemala, a city known for its historic architecture
  • Easy to reach on foot as part of a walk around the town
  • Also known as the Santa Catalina Arch, the name you may see on signs and maps

Around the arch

The arch makes a good starting point for exploring the surrounding streets, with their colonial façades, churches and plazas. Allow time to wander beyond it, since much of Antigua's character lies in its streets rather than in any single monument.

If you are planning a day in Antigua, the Arco de Santa Catalina is an uncomplicated stop: a short visit that gives a clear picture of the city's colonial past.
