Alfama is a historic neighborhood in Lisbon, Portugal, on the slopes below the old town, within the Lisbon District. It is one of the city's oldest quarters, and for many visitors it is where the feel of Lisbon is most easily found.

What to expect

Alfama is made up of narrow cobblestone streets that climb and twist between houses, so the best way to explore it is on foot, with no fixed route and time to wander. Along the way you will see colorful tiled buildings, and in many places the view opens out over the Tagus River.

The neighborhood is also known for its traditional Fado music venues. Fado is a central part of Portuguese culture, and Alfama is one of the places where it is performed, often in small, intimate rooms. An evening spent listening to it makes a memorable visit.

Planning your visit

  • Wear comfortable shoes with good grip, since the cobblestones can be uneven and the streets steep.
  • Allow a relaxed half-day or more, so you can stop, look around and enjoy the views.
  • Take an evening visit if you want to hear Fado, and check ahead for venue details.
  • Combine it with other parts of central Lisbon, which are close by and easy to reach on foot or by public transport.

Alfama suits visitors who enjoy walking, atmosphere and local music, and who want to see the older side of a city that has grown up around the river.
