The Almaty Region sits in the southeast of Kazakhstan, across Asia, and is the largest region in that part of the country. Its appeal lies in variety: within one administrative area the landscape moves from high mountains to lakes and wide steppe, so a visitor can cover a lot of ground without leaving the region.
What the landscape offers
- Mountains rise to the south and give the region much of its character, shaping the views and the outdoor options.
- Lakes are scattered across the region and break up the terrain, offering a contrast to the drier open country.
- Steppe covers the flatter areas, giving wide horizons and a sense of the scale of the country.
Almaty city at the centre
Almaty city is the major urban centre of the area. For many visitors it is the natural base: it offers the services, transport links and places to stay that make it practical to set out from. From the city, day trips reach into the surrounding countryside, so the urban and natural sides of the region are close together.
Planning a visit
Because the region spreads across very different terrain, it rewards a little planning. Consider which kind of landscape you most want to see, whether mountains, lakes or steppe, and build your route around it. Check current access and conditions for each area before you go, as these can vary with the season and the place.
