アンティグア・グアテマラ

Antigua Guatemala is a former capital of Guatemala, set in the department of Sacatepéquez in the country's central highlands. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and most visitors come for the city itself: its well-preserved Spanish colonial architecture and the way its streets are framed by volcanoes.

What to see

The city is known for its churches and monasteries, many of them standing as ruins or partly restored, which give the centre a quiet, layered feel. The buildings are often painted in warm, colourful tones, and walking the streets is one of the simplest ways to take in the place. Three volcanoes rise around the city, and their presence in the background is a constant part of the view from almost any street.

What kind of visit it makes

  • A slow walking visit, best suited to unhurried days of looking at façades, courtyards and church interiors.
  • A chance to see colonial urban design in a city that has kept much of its historic character.
  • A base for exploring the surrounding Sacatepéquez area, which lies within easy reach of the city.

Antigua is also known by the names Antigua and La Antigua Guatemala, so you may see any of these in guides and on maps. Those who enjoy architecture, history and a relaxed pace will find the city a rewarding place to spend time.
