ア・ファモサ

A Famosa is the surviving remains of a Portuguese fortress in Malacca, Malaysia, built in 1511. It is one of the oldest European architectural structures still standing in Southeast Asia, and it sits in the heart of Malacca's historic district on Jalan Parameswara.

What to expect

The site is a heritage monument rather than a complete fort, so the visit is best approached as a walk among old stonework. Its best-known surviving feature is the gateway, which is often called the Porta de Santiago. You may also see it referred to simply as the Portuguese Fort, a name that reflects its origins.

  • Kind of visit: a short historic stop, suited to a stroll through the town centre
  • Setting: the historic core of Malacca, among other heritage landmarks
  • Who it suits: visitors interested in colonial-era architecture and the layered history of the Strait of Malacca

Getting there and around

Because A Famosa stands in the central historic district, it fits easily into a day spent exploring the old town on foot. Visitors can combine it with other sites nearby to make a fuller picture of Malacca's past. For details before you go, the site can be reached by telephone at +60 6 232 8888.

A visit here is a good way to see one of the physical traces of the Portuguese presence in the region, set against the everyday life of a city that still wears its history openly.
