Armagh is a historic city in Northern Ireland, set in County Armagh within the United Kingdom. It has long been the ecclesiastical capital of Ireland, a role it has held for more than fifteen hundred years, and it is often described as the island's oldest city. For a visitor, it offers a compact place where church history, Georgian streets and the study of the stars sit close together.

Two cathedrals and a spiritual past

The city's skyline is shaped by two cathedrals, both of which stand on high ground and can be seen from across the surrounding countryside. Armagh's links with Saint Patrick give the place much of its character, and many visitors come with the church and its story in mind. Even a short walk around the central area brings you past buildings that reflect this long religious life.

Georgian streets and an observatory

Armagh also keeps a fine stock of Georgian architecture, and its streets reward a slow stroll. Alongside this older fabric sits the Armagh Observatory and Planetarium, which connects the city to modern astronomy and to public learning. The contrast between centuries-old church life and a working observatory is one of the things that makes Armagh distinctive.

  • Visit the two cathedrals and the surrounding historic centre.
  • Walk the Georgian streets at an unhurried pace.
  • Look in on the observatory and planetarium for a view of the night sky and of science in practice.

Armagh suits a day trip as well as a longer stay. Those interested in history, faith or astronomy will find plenty to occupy them, and the city's modest scale makes it easy to see a good deal on foot.
