Cabo de la Vela is a remote desert peninsula on the northernmost coast of Colombia, in South America. Here the arid Guajira Desert runs down to the Caribbean Sea, and the result is a landscape that feels far from everyday travel.

The peninsula is sacred to the Wayuu people, the indigenous community that has lived in this part of the Guajira for generations. Visitors come as guests in their territory, and the area offers a chance to learn about Wayuu life and culture directly from the communities who live there.

What you will see

  • Dramatic red cliffs rising above the shoreline
  • Pristine beaches along the Caribbean coast
  • Desert scenery where dry land meets open sea
  • Some of the most striking sunsets in South America

The contrast between the red rock, pale sand and blue water gives the place its otherworldly character, and the evening light over the sea is a common highlight for those who make the journey.

Planning a visit

Cabo de la Vela is a destination for travellers who are comfortable with remoteness and simple surroundings. It suits a visit centred on landscape, quiet beaches and cultural encounter rather than city amenities. Conditions are basic compared with Colombia's larger tourist centres, so it is worth arriving with a clear idea of what the trip involves.

Going in a spirit of respect for the Wayuu community and their land makes the experience richer. Taking time to listen, ask questions and move through the area with care is the best way to appreciate what makes this peninsula so distinctive.
