グアナカステ州

熱帯乾燥林、熱帯雨林とは異なる種を支える独特の生態系、そして重要な海洋保護区域を特徴とする北西部の州。

Guanacaste is a province in the northwest of Costa Rica, in Central America. It is the country's driest region, and its landscape reads differently from the rainforest image many visitors arrive with: here the trees are lower and more open, and the seasons are more sharply divided.

What the landscape offers

The province is known for its tropical dry forests. These ecosystems support a different set of species than the rainforests found elsewhere in the country, so a visit here shows a distinct side of Costa Rica's natural diversity. Walking through dry forest, you notice how the vegetation changes with the season and how the wildlife adapts to the drier conditions.

The coast and the sea

Guanacaste also has important marine protected areas. For visitors interested in the ocean, these protected waters make the province a meaningful place to spend time on the Pacific side of the country, with the coast and its surrounding sea forming part of the same natural picture as the forests inland.

Who the visit suits

  • Travellers interested in ecosystems beyond the classic rainforest
  • Nature lovers who want to combine forest walks with time by the sea
  • Visitors planning a trip across the country who want to see its northwest

Because Guanacaste is a whole province rather than a single site, the most rewarding approach is to plan around the areas that interest you most, whether that is forest, coast or marine life, and to allow enough time to move between them. The province rewards a slower pace, with the dry landscape and the protected waters giving each day its own character.
