コロニア

ウルグアイ南西部の県で、歴史的なコロニアル建築、ユネスコ世界遺産、そして美しいリオ・デ・ラ・プラタの海岸線で知られています。

Colonia is a department in the southwest of Uruguay, on the northern shore of the Rio de la Plata, the broad estuary that separates Uruguay from Argentina. It is a region that many visitors reach as a day trip or an overnight stop on the way between Montevideo and Buenos Aires, but it rewards a slower visit.

What draws visitors

The department is known for its historic colonial architecture. Its old town preserves streets, stone walls and buildings from the period when the Spanish and Portuguese were contesting this stretch of the river, and parts of it are recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. Walking the cobbled lanes, with their low houses and river views, is the main pleasure of a visit.

The coastline is the other attraction. The Rio de la Plata here is wide and calm, and the shoreline is picturesque, with small beaches, promenades and quiet stretches where you can simply sit and watch the water.

Planning a visit

  • Allow at least a day to walk the historic quarter at a relaxed pace.
  • Set aside time for the riverside, especially in the late afternoon.
  • Combine the trip with a stay in Montevideo or Buenos Aires, both within reach by ferry or road.

Colonia suits travellers interested in history, architecture and unhurried coastal scenery. Those looking for a busy nightlife or a large city will find its pace much gentler, which is part of its appeal.
