The Chouf Mountains form the largest district in Lebanon, a region of high ridges, terraced slopes and small villages set above the coast. It is a place for slow travel: a day or two spent moving between palaces, villages and forest paths gives a fair sense of the area.

What to see

  • Beiteddine Palace, the best-known building in the district, which crowns the landscape and is the main reason many visitors come.
  • Mukhtara, a Druze village whose quiet streets reflect the community's traditions and its long presence in these mountains.
  • The Chouf Cedar Reserve, part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, where the cedar, Lebanon's national tree, grows among a varied range of wildlife.
  • Maronite and Druze heritage across the villages, which together give the district its layered character.

The mountain views change with the light and the seasons, and they are a reason to take time on the roads between sites rather than rushing from one to the next.

Planning a visit

The Chouf suits travellers who enjoy nature, history and walking at an easy pace. Because the sites are spread across the mountains, it helps to plan routes in advance and allow time for each stop. Local hospitality is a constant feature of the area, and a visit often includes an unhurried meal or conversation with the people who live there.
