Chincha Province lies on Peru's southern coast, in the Ica region of South America. It is best known as a heartland of Afro-Peruvian culture, where music, dance and cooking carry traditions shaped by African, indigenous and Spanish influences. For a visitor, it is a place to listen, eat and watch as much as to sightsee.

Culture and festivals

The province is closely associated with Peru's black community, and its cultural life is lively and visible. Traditional music and dance are part of everyday gatherings and of its festivals. The best known of these is the Verano Negro, the summer celebration that honours the heritage of Peru's Afro-descendant population. If your dates allow, timing a visit around it gives you the fullest sense of the province's identity.

Pisco and the countryside

Chincha is also known for pisco production, and the grape-growing landscape around it is part of the appeal. Visitors can explore historic haciendas, which offer a window into the agricultural past of the coast. The surrounding area suits a slower pace, with time to walk, talk with local hosts and taste regional food.

Planning your visit

  • Plan around the festival calendar if you want to see the Verano Negro.
  • Allow time for the haciendas as well as the towns.
  • Combine the visit with other destinations in the Ica region for a wider trip.
