プーケット大仏

Big Buddha Phuket is a large white marble statue of the Buddha, rising about 45 metres above the top of Nakkerd Hill near Karon in Mueang Phuket District. It is one of the island's best-known landmarks, and it is visible from a good distance, so many visitors see it on the drive around the south of the island before they ever climb to it.

The statue is also known by several other names, including Phra Yai, Phra Puttamingmongkol Akenakkiri Buddha and Ming Mongkol Buddha. You may see any of these on signs, maps or in conversation.

What a visit offers

The main reason to come is the view. From the hill, you can look out across Phuket and over the surrounding islands, which makes the climb worthwhile whether or not you are interested in the statue itself. Many people come in the late afternoon, when the light softens over the water.

Because the monument stands on a hill, it is a good stop for anyone who wants a break from beaches and busy streets. It works well as a short visit within a longer day of sightseeing on the island.

Around the site

  • Karon: the monument sits close to Karon, where you can find places to eat and stay.
  • Other parts of Phuket: the island's beaches, markets and old town are all within reach by road.
  • Getting there: the site is reached by road, and a taxi or private vehicle is the simplest option for most visitors.
