Benishangul-Gumuz is a region in western Ethiopia, lying along the border with Sudan. It is a land of fertile lowlands and rolling hills, drained by the Blue Nile, the river that rises in the Ethiopian highlands and carries its waters north toward Sudan and Egypt.

The region is known for its ethnic diversity. Several peoples live here, among them the Berta, the Gumuz and the Shinasha, and each keeps its own cultural traditions and languages. For a visitor, this makes the area feel quite different from the better-known parts of Ethiopia, and the everyday life of its villages and markets reflects that variety.

What a visit offers

  • Landscapes of lowland plains, hills and the river itself
  • Contact with several distinct ethnic communities and their languages
  • A rural setting shaped by farming, with agricultural potential and natural resources across the land

Planning your trip

Benishangul-Gumuz suits travellers who want to move away from the main circuits and spend time in a quieter, less visited part of the country. Because it lies on the Sudanese border in the west, it is best approached as part of a longer journey through Ethiopia, with time set aside for the rural roads and the slower pace of the region. Check current travel conditions and local guidance before you set out, and plan your route around the places you most want to see.
