678年に創建された歴史ある仏教寺院で、Geumjeongsan山の山腹に位置しています。美しい伝統建築と静寂な山間の環境を持つ、韓国で最も重要な寺院の一つです。

Beomeosa Temple sits in Geumjeong-gu, in the northern part of Busan, South Korea. It is one of the country's best-known Buddhist temples, and visitors come as much for its setting as for its buildings. The temple is also known by its Korean name, 범어사 (Beomeo-sa).

The temple and its setting

Beomeosa was founded in 678 AD during the Silla Dynasty, and it has long been counted among Korea's most important Buddhist temples. It stands on the slopes of Geumjeongsan Mountain, so the approach runs through trees and quiet paths rather than city streets. Many visitors describe the feeling of stepping from the urban area into a calm, wooded valley.

What to see

  • Traditional architecture: the temple halls show the forms of Korean Buddhist building, set among the trees of the mountain.
  • Forest surroundings: walking through the grounds is a gentle way to enjoy the mountain air and the sounds of the valley.
  • A place for quiet reflection: the serene atmosphere suits a slower pace of visit.

Planning your visit

Beomeosa is best reached as part of a day in the Geumjeong district, where the mountain and temple grounds make a natural outing. Because it is a working temple, visitors are asked to behave with respect, keeping voices low and dressing modestly. For current contact details, you can call +82-51-508-3122, and the address is 546 Beomeosa-ro, Geumjeong-gu, Busan 46719, South Korea.
