Apulia is the region that forms the heel of Italy's boot, stretching along the Adriatic and Ionian coasts in the south of the country. It is a place of open landscapes, long coastlines and a slower rhythm than many better-known Italian destinations, and it makes a rewarding base for travellers interested in towns, countryside and the sea.

What to look for

  • Trulli houses: the whitewashed, cone-roofed dwellings that are among the region's most recognisable sights, particularly around the town of Alberobello.
  • Olive groves: rows of ancient olive trees cover much of the countryside, and they shape the views from road and rail alike.
  • Baroque architecture: towns across the region are known for their distinctive Baroque buildings, with ornate facades and carved stone that reward a slow walk through old centres.

Planning a visit

Apulia suits a visit built around a few places rather than a rushed circuit. Many travellers combine a stay in a historic town with time in the surrounding countryside, visiting the whitewashed villages and olive estates by car or on foot, and spending part of the day on the coast. The landscape is best enjoyed at an unhurried pace, with time to stop for a meal and take in the light on the stone and the trees.

Whether Apulia is right for you depends on what you want from a trip. If you are drawn to distinctive architecture, rural scenery and a relaxed pace along the sea, it offers a good deal to explore, and its towns and countryside give plenty of reason to linger.
