Besakih Temple, also known as Pura Besakih or the Mother Temple of Bali, sits on the slopes of Mount Agung in Karangasem Regency, on the island of Bali in Indonesia. It is the largest and holiest temple complex on the island, made up of more than 80 individual temples spread across the hillside.
What to expect
The complex is a place of worship first, so visitors are asked to dress respectfully and to behave quietly, especially around shrines where people are praying. The setting is the main draw: terraces climb the mountainside, and the view takes in the volcano and the surrounding countryside. Because the temples are spread out over a large area, a visit is best approached slowly, with time to walk between the different sanctuaries.

Around the temple
Besakih lies in Karangasem, on the eastern side of Bali, so it works well as part of a day trip exploring the area's villages, rice fields and other temples. Those who want to see more of the island's spiritual life will find the complex a good starting point for understanding how Balinese temples are arranged and used.
