Azhdahak is a mountain in Armenia, rising to 3,597 metres and counted as the country's third-highest peak. It stands in the Geghama Mountains, and from its upper slopes the land falls away toward Lake Sevan, one of the best-known features of the Armenian landscape.

What to see

The summit is the main draw. The views run through a full 360 degrees, taking in the surrounding ridges of the Geghama range and, below them, the broad water of Lake Sevan. On a clear day the sweep of mountain and lake is the reason many visitors make the climb.

Azhdahak is also known for its rock carvings, or petroglyphs, which are thought to date back thousands of years. They include hunting scenes and symbols that some read as astronomical. Their meaning is not fully understood, which gives the site an air of mystery. The mountain is regarded as sacred, and visitors are asked to treat the carvings and the setting with care.

Planning a visit

  • Bring warm layers, even in summer, since the altitude makes conditions change quickly.
  • Good footwear matters on rocky ground and near the carvings.
  • Check the weather before setting out, as cloud often hides the view.
  • Allow time to take in both the summit panorama and the petroglyphs.

Azhdahak suits travellers who enjoy high country, open views and archaeology in equal measure. Combined with a stop at Lake Sevan, it makes a rewarding half-day or longer excursion from the surrounding area.
