阿法尔州

The Afar Region lies in northeastern Ethiopia, on the Horn of Africa, and it is one of the country's most striking landscapes. Much of it belongs to the African Rift Valley, where the earth is slowly pulling apart, and the results are visible almost everywhere you look.

A landscape of extremes

The region is best known for the Danakil Depression, a low basin that is among the hottest and lowest places on the planet. The ground here is shaped by volcanic and geothermal activity, and the scenery can feel closer to another world than to the rest of Ethiopia.

  • Active volcanoes, which give the depression its dramatic character
  • Colourful sulphur springs, with bright mineral tones across the ground
  • Vast salt flats, where the Afar people have harvested salt for centuries

What a visit offers

A trip here suits travellers who want raw, unusual scenery and an encounter with a landscape that few places can match. The salt flats in particular show a working tradition still rooted in local life, so the visit is as much about people and their long relationship with this harsh land as it is about geology. The Rift Valley setting also makes the region a rare window onto how continents are formed.

Because the conditions are demanding, visitors should plan carefully and travel with local knowledge. The heat and remote terrain are part of what makes the region distinctive, and they are worth preparing for.
