Región de Aisén

The Aisén Region lies in southern Chile, in the northern part of Patagonia. It is one of the country's most remote areas, and its population is thin across a large expanse of land. Visitors come for the scale of the landscape and the sense of quiet that follows from it.

What the region offers

  • Pristine wilderness: much of the terrain remains largely untouched, with few settlements between its natural features.
  • Glaciers: ice fields and glaciers shape the high country and feed the waters below.
  • Fjords: the coastline is cut by deep inlets, best seen from the water.
  • Open space: sparse population means long stretches of road and landscape with little else in view.

What kind of visit it suits

The Aisén Region suits travellers who want to be outdoors and are comfortable with distance. Because the region is sparsely populated and remote, journeys take time, and services can be spread far apart. Planning ahead for transport, supplies and accommodation is sensible. Those who prefer dense towns and a crowded itinerary may find the region too quiet, while those drawn to wild country, ice and water will find it a rewarding place to spend time.

The region sits within the wider Patagonian landscape of Chile, so a visit can be set alongside other parts of southern Chile. Travellers should check current conditions and access before they go, as remote areas can change with weather and season.
