Ardèche

Ardèche is a department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of southeastern France, named after the Ardèche River that flows through it. The area is renowned for its dramatic natural landscapes, including the famous Pont d'Arc natural stone arch and the Ardèche Gorges, making it a popular destination for outdoor activities like canoeing, hiking, and caving. Ardèche is also known for its chestnut forests, traditional villages, and as the location of the Chauvet Cave, which contains some of the world's oldest known cave paintings dating back over 30,000 years.

Ardèche is a department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of southeastern France. It takes its name from the Ardèche River, which runs through the territory and shapes much of its character.

The landscape is the main draw. The area is known for its dramatic natural scenery, including the Pont d'Arc, a natural stone arch, and the Ardèche Gorges. For many visitors, these are the reason to come.

What a visit offers

  • Canoeing on the river, with the gorges as a setting
  • Hiking through the surrounding countryside
  • Caving, another activity the region is popular for

Beyond the gorges

Ardèche is also associated with chestnut production, which adds a local food and rural thread to a trip centred on the outdoors. Because it is a department rather than a single town, a visit is best planned around the area you want to explore, whether that is the river, the gorges or the villages nearby.

Ardèche suits visitors who want time outside, a slower pace and landscapes that are the focus of the trip rather than a backdrop to it.
