Bayard Rock

Una formación rocosa de piedra caliza en forma de aguja de 40 metros de altura a lo largo del río Meuse. La leyenda dice que fue creada por los cascos del caballo Bayard.

Bayard Rock, also known as Rocher Bayard, is a limestone needle rising about 40 metres above the Meuse River at Dinant, in southern Belgium. Its tall, narrow silhouette makes it one of the most recognisable natural landmarks in the town, and it stands right beside the river that shapes the valley below.

What to expect

The rock is an outdoor landmark, so a visit is simple: you come to see the formation itself and the view of the river and town around it. It is reached from the Route de Philippeville, and it is open at all times, so you can visit at any hour, in daylight or after dark.

  • Type of visit: a short, open-air stop for sightseeing and photographs
  • Setting: the limestone cliffs and the Meuse valley
  • Access: open 24 hours a day, seven days a week

The legend behind the name

According to local legend, the rock was shaped by the hooves of Bayard, the horse said to have carried the four sons of Aymon. The story is part of the regional folklore of the Meuse, and it gives the formation a memorable name to take with you.

Around Dinant

Bayard Rock pairs well with a wider walk through Dinant, where the river, the cliffs and the old streets of the town are close together. Visitors who enjoy natural scenery will find the Meuse valley a pleasant backdrop for a day trip.
