Chapman's Peak Drive is a scenic coastal road on the Atlantic side of the Cape Peninsula, near Cape Town in the Western Cape, South Africa. It runs between Hout Bay and Noordhoek, cut into the mountainside above the ocean. Locals also call it "Chappies".
What the drive offers
The road is best known for its views. As it climbs and bends along the mountain, the coastline opens out below, with the sea on one side and the rock face on the other. Because the route is built into the slope, each stretch shows a different angle of the shoreline and the mountains behind it. It is a road for the window seat, or for stopping at the pull-offs where the traffic allows.
Planning a visit
Chapman's Peak Drive is a drive rather than a destination in itself, so it suits a few kinds of trip:
- A slow scenic drive from Hout Bay towards Noordhoek, or the reverse
- A stop between other plans on the Cape Peninsula
- A photo stop for those who enjoy coastal landscapes
Hout Bay at one end offers a harbour village to explore before or after the drive. Noordhoek at the other end is a quieter area with its own beach. Visitors can combine the road with either place to make a fuller day.
