Cuevas de Elephanta

Un Sitio Patrimonio Mundial de la UNESCO en la isla Elephanta que presenta templos hindúes en cuevas dedicados a Shiva. Famoso por la escultura de Shiva de tres cabezas Trimurti.

The Elephanta Caves sit on Elephanta Island, reached by boat across the harbour from Mumbai in the state of Maharashtra. The island is also known as Gharapuri, and the caves carry that name too. They are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and hold a group of Hindu cave temples dedicated to Shiva.

What to see

The highlight is the Trimurti, a carved sculpture of Shiva with three faces, which is the best-known image in the caves. Around it, the rock-cut halls and their pillars and carvings reward a slow walk. Many visitors take their time moving from chamber to chamber, reading the sculptures and noticing how the interiors are shaped from the living rock.

Planning a visit

  • Getting there: Boats run from the harbour in Mumbai to the island. The crossing is part of the outing.
  • Climbing: The caves are set above the landing area, so expect steps and some uphill walking.
  • Contact: For current information, the site can be reached by phone at +91 22 2284 1877.
  • Address: Elephanta Island, Mumbai, Maharashtra 400094, India.

Because the caves are on an island, a visit fits well into a day spent on the water and on the coast. Back on the mainland, Mumbai offers a wide range of places to eat and explore before or after the trip.
