Puerta de la India

Un monumento icónico en forma de arco construido en 1924 para conmemorar la visita del Rey George V y la Reina Mary. Ubicado en el paseo marítimo del Puerto de Mumbai.

The Gateway of India is an arch monument on the waterfront of Mumbai Harbour, in the Apollo Bandar area of Colaba, at the southern tip of the city. It was built in 1924 to mark the visit of King George V and Queen Mary, and it has since become one of the best-known landmarks in Mumbai, sometimes called the city's Taj Mahal.

What to expect

The monument itself is the main attraction: a large stone arch facing the water, with the harbour and the boats moving across it in front of you. Visitors usually come to walk around the structure, take in the view across the harbour, and watch the activity along the waterfront. It is a straightforward visit, well suited to a short stop rather than a long stay.

The area around it

  • Colaba, the neighbourhood it sits in, has many older streets and a lively mix of shops and places to eat.
  • The waterfront makes a pleasant place for a slow walk, especially in the cooler hours of the day.
  • Its position at the edge of the harbour makes it an easy starting point for exploring southern Mumbai on foot.

If you are planning a visit, the monument's contact number is +91 22 2202 6364. The address is Apollo Bandar, Colaba, Mumbai, Maharashtra 400001, India.
