Franschhoek

Franschhoek is a valley town in South Africa's Western Cape, set among towering mountains and the vineyards that cover much of the land around it. Its name means "French Corner," a reference to the French Huguenots who settled here in the 17th century. Their influence is still visible in the town's character, and it has long given the place a reputation as South Africa's gourmet capital.

What a visit offers

  • Dining: The town is known for its restaurants, and food is central to any stay here.
  • Wine: Historic wine estates and smaller boutique wineries sit within easy reach of the town centre.
  • Wine tram: A Cap Classique wine tram carries visitors through the valley's vineyards, a relaxed way to see the landscape and sample the local sparkling wine.

Planning your trip

Franschhoek suits visitors who want to combine good food, wine tasting and mountain scenery in one place. Because the town is compact and the estates are spread along the valley roads, it works well as a base for a day or more. Many people choose to slow down here, moving between tastings, long lunches and walks among the vines.

Before you go, check the current arrangements for tram rides and individual estates, as these can change, and book ahead where you can.
