Gard

Departamento francés en la región de Occitanie, conocido por el acueducto romano Pont du Gard y la costa mediterránea que incluye los humedales de Camargue.

Gard is a department in the Occitanie region of southern France, stretching from the Cévennes hills down towards the Mediterranean coast. It is a place of contrasts, where upland landscapes give way to lowland plains and, further south, to open lagoons and marshes.

What draws visitors

The best-known sight is the Pont du Gard, a Roman aqueduct that crosses the Gardon river. Its three tiers of arches are a striking piece of ancient engineering, and standing beneath them gives a clear sense of the scale involved. Many visitors combine the aqueduct with a walk along the riverbanks, where the water and the surrounding hills make a restful setting.

The department also reaches the Mediterranean coastline, which includes the Camargue wetlands. The Camargue is a flat delta of marshes, lagoons and grasslands, shaped by the Rhône, and it suits visitors who enjoy quiet natural scenery, birdlife and slow exploration by foot, bicycle or car.

Planning a visit

  • Allow time for the Pont du Gard and the river area, which work well as a half-day or full-day outing.
  • Pair a stop in the interior with a trip to the coast, since the two parts of the department feel quite different.
  • In the Camargue, expect a landscape that rewards unhurried travel rather than a list of sights.

Gard suits travellers interested in Roman history, river and countryside walks, and the wetlands and coastline of the Mediterranean, all within one department in the south of France.
