Grenoble

Ciudad alpina rodeada de montañas, conocida por sus universidades, centros de investigación y deportes de invierno. Fue sede de los Juegos Olímpicos de Invierno de 1968 y es un importante centro tecnológico.

Grenoble is a city in south-eastern France, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, set in a broad valley where the Isère and Drac rivers meet. Mountains rise on almost every side, so the city feels closely tied to its landscape. It is also known by the older names Grenoblo and Gratianopolis, which you may see on signs, maps or in local history.

What the city is known for

Grenoble is a university city with a large student population, and its universities sit alongside a dense cluster of research centers. The area is also recognised as a major technology hub, which gives the city a lively, forward-looking character that sets it apart from many smaller French cities. It hosted the Winter Olympics in 1968, and that connection to winter sport still shapes how people use the surrounding mountains.

What a visit offers

  • Mountain views from almost any point in the city, which make it easy to combine urban walks with time outdoors.
  • A strong student and research atmosphere, especially in the cafés and streets near the universities.
  • Winter sports in the hills and mountains close by, the setting that has long defined the city.
  • A base for exploring the wider Alpine region of south-eastern France.

Grenoble suits visitors who want a city with a clear sense of place: a working centre of learning and industry, with the mountains never far away. Plan your stay around the season you visit, since the appeal of the surrounding slopes changes through the year.
