Doubs

Doubs is a department in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region of eastern France, named after the Doubs River that runs through it. It sits close to the Swiss border, and the mix of river valleys, wooded hills and mountain country gives it a character quite different from the plains further west.

A landscape of river and mountain

Parts of the Jura Mountains lie within the department, so the scenery rises and falls with the valleys and ridges. The Doubs River shapes much of the land, and the forests that cover large areas make it a good choice for those who want to be outdoors. Visitors often come for walking, cycling and other open-air activities.

Watchmaking and local produce

Doubs is known for its watchmaking industry, which is centred on Besançon, the prefecture. Anyone interested in precision craft or industrial history will find the connection to the city worth exploring. The department is also famous for its cheese, and tasting local dairy products is a natural part of a visit.

Planning a visit

  • Base yourself in Besançon to see the watchmaking heritage and the city's amenities.
  • Head into the surrounding countryside for forests, river valleys and Jura scenery.
  • Allow time for the local cheese, which is a highlight of the area's food.
  • Because the department borders Switzerland, it also makes a convenient starting point for crossing into the neighbouring country.
