Dordogne is a department in southwestern France, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. It takes its name from the Dordogne River, which winds through the landscape and shapes much of what a visitor sees. The area is often called Périgord, and many travellers come to it with that older name in mind.

What draws visitors

The department is known first for its prehistoric heritage. The Lascaux caves, with their ancient paintings, are among the best-known sites in the region and make a natural starting point for anyone interested in early human history. Beyond the caves, the wider countryside is dotted with reminders of a very long human presence.

The region is also rich in medieval castles and picturesque villages. A day's drive can take you from one hilltop settlement to another, with the river valleys providing a steady backdrop.

Food and everyday life

Dordogne has a distinctive cuisine, and its markets and restaurants are a large part of the appeal. Truffles and foie gras are closely associated with the area, and many visitors plan their meals around local specialities as much as around sightseeing.

Planning a visit

  • Allow time for the prehistoric sites, which are a central reason many people visit.
  • Combine castles and villages in a single route along the river.
  • Build in unhurried meals, since the food is a highlight of the region.

Whether you come for the caves, the castles or the table, Dordogne offers a slower pace of travel within easy reach of its river valleys and villages.
