Puentes Cubiertos

The Covered Bridges of Strasbourg stand in the Grand Est region of France, where three historic bridges and their medieval towers cross the Ill River. They are among the city's most recognisable landmarks and a reminder of its defensive past, when these towers guarded the waterways into the city.

What you will see

Although the bridges are no longer covered, the 13th-century structures keep their character. The towers rise over the water, and the river views from the crossings are among the most scenic in the centre. Visitors often come simply to walk the bridges and look back at the old houses and waterside lanes.

  • Three historic bridges, each with its medieval tower
  • Open views over the Ill River
  • A popular spot for photographs, especially from the water's edge

Visiting the area

The bridges lie in the Petite France district, a compact quarter of narrow canals, timber-framed buildings and small squares. It makes a natural place to combine a stop with a slow stroll, pausing at the river and wandering the nearby streets. Because the district is small, you can see the bridges and the surrounding lanes in a single visit without needing a fixed plan.

The Covered Bridges suit anyone who enjoys historic architecture, river scenery or photography, and they fit easily into a walk through the centre of Strasbourg. If you are interested in the city's defences and its waterside history, they are a good place to start.
